Attenborough Class 2026-27
Autumn 1
Week 5:This week Year 3/4 have explored lots of new learning. We have been hands – on in Maths, using a place value chart and counters to practice adding two 4 digit numbers. After practising with concrete and pictorial representations, we have started using the column method to answer sums.
Children in Year 4 are working hard to learn and recall their multiplication facts speedily in preparation for the MTC in June as well as their learning in Year 5. TTRS have now launched their ‘Unofficial MTC check.’ Each time, your child logs onto TTRS, they will need to complete a check. Their results and scores will be sent to school so we can practice the times tables we find tricky!
In English, we began our new unit. To engage with this unit, we had a brief introduction to Howard Carter. We learnt that his Dad was an artist and Carter was inspired to begin sketching Ancient Egyptian artefacts. We stepped into Howard Carter’s shoes and spent our Monday afternoon sketching different artefacts and discussing what we notice, think and wonder about them.
Week 4: Attenborough Class have had a fantastic week reflecting on their work and learning to independently edit their writing as well as respond to adult feedback effectively. We are excited to begin our new unit in English next week, where we will be learning to write a Non-Fiction diary recount based on Howard Carter’s discovery.
In Science this week, the children were introduced to magnets. We learnt the difference between the two magnetic poles. We were able to describe that opposites attract and poles that are the same, repel. During the lesson, we planned an investigation to identify magnetic and non-magnetic materials as well as predict if the object will attract or repel. We are looking forward to investigating and writing our conclusions next week.
In Maths, whilst Year 4 were building on their prior KS2 place value knowledge with Mrs Philcox, Year 3 were introduced to Roman Numerals. We had lots of fun learning a song and matching numbers together.
We have ended the week with a creative Music lesson. We have learnt the impact of a soundscape in an animated short video. During the lesson, we talked about how music can great drama and emotion. We used different instruments and body percussion to create our own soundscape to an animated video.
Week 3: Year 3 and 4 have worked hard this week, building on prior learning from the start of term as well as previous years. In Maths, we have been identifying numbers to 10,000 on a number line and using our number knowledge to estimate on a number line. In English, we have finished planning our alternative viewpoint narrative based on the Egyptian Cinderella. Next week, we will begin drafting our piece of writing whilst learning to edit our writing. In Science, we built on our enquiry last week however learnt to change variables during an investigation to support us with our scientific reasoning.
Finally, our first Attenborough TTRS Tournament is live today! Children will compete with each other in battles to climb the class leader board. At the end of term, we will announce the winner! TTRS is a fantastic platform to practice multiplication facts. These are essential for our learning in Year 5.

Week 2: Attenborough Class have been extremely busy this week. The children were excited to begin their Topic unit: Ancient Egyptians. As a class, we defined the word ‘ancient’ and then went onto to learn about when the Egyptian Age was in comparison with other historic time periods.
In English, we analysed a model text of a narrative based on The Egyptian Cinderella by Shirley Climo. After reading the text, we identified different features that we have learnt in Year 2 and 3. I am extremely proud of Attenborough for showing engagement and determination to build on their prior learning.
There is no doubt that Attenborough Class are becoming brilliant mathematicians. They have worked hard to learn to recognise, partition and use flexible partitioning up to 10,000.
Week 1: Welcome back Year 3 and 4! We have had a wonderful start back at school. Year 3 and 4 have settled in quickly to routines and are showing their best efforts in all lessons.

Youlbury Residential 2026
On Wednesday 20th May, Year 4 travelled to Youlbury Scout Camp in Oxford to begin their 3 day residential. When we arrived, we had our lunch on the lawn before setting up our tents and unpacking our bags. It wasn’t long until we started our first activity. Some children enjoyed Aeroball whilst others showed lots of courage by taking on the zipline. After a busy afternoon, we enjoyed chicken curry for dinner and a delicious donut before settling down for the night.
We woke up bright and early the next morning and reflected on all the noises we heard during the night. After devouring some delicious, sweet pancakes we had some free time before our first activity. Some children enjoyed completing an A-Z Scavenger Hunt, whilst some created friendship bracelets and used yarn to practise their weaving skills. Our activities for the day included Crate Stacking, Low ropes and Den building. All activities involved courage and lots of teamwork. All children showed fantastic listening skills during these activities. Before we knew it, it was time for dinner and we enjoyed burger, chips and a refreshing salad. Don’t forget the ice lolly for pudding! After dinner, we sat around the campfire playing games and singing songs before getting ready to bed.
On Friday morning, we woke up a little later because we were so tired! Once again, we filled up on breakfast before heading to our final activity of our residential. Miss Morton’s group had a fantastic time flying through the air on the zipline. Mrs Lee’s group showed their teamwork skills during Shelter and den building. There was no doubt, the biggest challenge was yet to come… packing our bags! We were sad to leave Youlbury but very proud of our achievements during the residential.
